QUEER WOMEN OF COLOR media arts project turns 20

It promises to be a “Joyful Reunion” when the Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project (QWOCMAP) celebrates 20 years of excellence during its 2024 International Queer Women of Color Film Festival, June 14-16, at the Presidio Theatre in San Francisco.
The free, three-day festival will premiere 44 films in five screenings, representing filmmakers from around the globe. All films are subtitled for deaf and hard-of-hearing, audio described for the blind and low vision and ASL interpretation will be provided along with many other forms of accessibility.
On Saturday, June 15, the festival will host “Unshakeable Legacy: Queer Women of Color Filmmakers” – a star-studded panel moderated by award-winning independent filmmaker Madeleine Lim and founding Executive/Artistic Director of QWOCMAP.
This year’s annual event explores human connection and shines a light on horizons filled with beauty and the potential for transformation. From reclaiming Visayan ancestral traditions to the endeavors of Kānaka ‘Ōiwi; from a Deaf Korean-adoptee’s soul-searching voyage to a skater girl’s hope for a better world; and from the ebbs of spiritual grief to the celebration of transformational queer Black love; each film in this year’s festival navigate shared dreams.
“Film screenings orient audiences amidst crashing waves of regressive rhetoric surrounding racial, sexual and gender diversity,” QWOCMAP organizers said. “Like an ancient compass, these films point us to more complex understandings of Indigenous knowledge, shared ecology and queer theories.
