This Wednesday, the Oakland International Film Festival will kick off its 23rd season with 11 days of short films from around the globe, panel discussions and more at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The annual festival<\/strong><\/a>, presented by nonprofit The Oakland Film Society, first launched in 2002 with the intention of bringing a diverse mix of films that empower the people who experience them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our mission is to promote independent filmmakers and their stories, while utilizing films to improve the city of Oakland,” said David Roach, co-founder and director of the festival in this year’s program<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of this year’s films \u2013 close to shades Magazine’s heart \u2013 is “Beyond the Headlines, The NABJ Journey<\/a><\/strong>.” The 40-minute documentary was created by the National Association of Black Journalists for its 50th anniversary as an organization, which was founded in 1975. The screening begins at 6:45 p.m. and will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Bay Area and national NABJ members follows immediately after.\u00a0Tickets can be purchased for $15 at the theater or online HERE<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
