{"id":213,"date":"2023-03-13T03:53:24","date_gmt":"2023-03-13T10:53:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maginecreativeservices.com\/shadesmagazine2023\/?p=213"},"modified":"2024-03-13T09:34:16","modified_gmt":"2024-03-13T16:34:16","slug":"educators-share-how-disparities-impact-oakland-high-schoolers-during-covid-19-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maginecreativeservices.com\/shadesmagazine2023\/educators-share-how-disparities-impact-oakland-high-schoolers-during-covid-19-pandemic\/","title":{"rendered":"oakland schools"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Educators share how disparities impact Oakland high schoolers during COVID-19 pandemic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color\" style=\"color:#000000ad\"><strong><em>By Brandy Collins<\/em>, <em>shades Magazine<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As stories citing the impact of COVID-19 on education continue to be published and aired nationwide, several studies&nbsp;are finding that the pandemic has increased the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/education\/the-impact-of-covid-19-on-education-insights-education-at-a-glance-2020.pdf\">disparities in our education systems.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One place where this holds true is Oakland, California.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During both the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years, there were about 35,000 students enrolled in the Oakland Unified School District. Some of it educators are sharing their perspectives on what it has been like for educators and their students over the past 30-plus months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen COVID came, it poked a lot of holes or brought to light the discrepancies in how we educated, who we educated \u2026 the poor quality of education,\u201d Bryan Massengale, Culture Keeper at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/destinyarts.org\/\">Destiny Arts Center<\/a>, said. \u201cAll of those issues came through. Everybody slowed down so that those things could be examined.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2021 study measuring student success during the pandemic called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/challengesuccess.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/CS-NBC-Study-Kids-Under-Pressure-PUBLISHED.pdf\">\u201cChallenging Success: Kids Under Pressure\u201d<\/a>, posed to students the following question:<em>&nbsp;\u201cCompared to the time before the coronavirus impacted your community, to what extent have your experiences in the following areas changed?\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>Challenge Success \u2013 a school reform nonprofit affiliated with the Stanford Graduate School of Education, in conjunction with NBC News \u2013 found&nbsp;56% of students reported their stress had increased.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the same year, another study conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported seeing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2022\/p0331-youth-mental-health-covid-19.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increase in mental health issues<\/a> among teens during the pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Educators in several schools in the East San Francisco Bay Area city say stressors in teens have manifested in different ways. Being distanced from on-site education and their peers \u2013 exasperated by a combination of social media, the increased isolation, lack of development and lack of mental wellness building \u2013 has created a communication divide among students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\" id=\"attachment_2936\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.maginecreativeservices.com\/shadesmagazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/attachment-1.jpeg?w=720\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2936\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Tatiana Church<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Tatiana Church, a restorative justice educator at Oakland Tech High School, refers to the pandemic school years of 2020 and 2021 as \u201cthe black box period\u201d \u2013 screens of black boxes where students\u2019 faces were absent.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI called it \u2018the black box\u2019 because I felt like most students weren\u2019t on camera or didn\u2019t have their cameras on or didn\u2019t even have a picture,\u201d Church said. \u201cIt would be the black box and their name.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elisha Davis, a physical education teacher also at Oakland Tech, explained the connection of social identity with the school was lacking and students were disengaged from activities that typically brought them enjoyment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe level of school spirit \u2013 like when you have rallies, when you have dances, when you have spirit weeks, when you have events \u2013 they\u2019re not as engaged,\u201d said Davis, who teaches incoming freshmen. \u201cThey\u2019re not really thrilled. It feels like walking zombies.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;She added it was difficult to teach students who appear to not care or are disengaged.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo it makes it really tough and hard to identify how to help or fulfill a student\u201d who seems to care only about \u201cwhat\u2019s on their phone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Church said another thing she noticed was that returning students also showed increased aggression to staff and one another.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe level of fights and just lack of students being able to interact with each other in person, without it being a conflict or problem, definitely skyrocketed because they just weren\u2019t around each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 108-year-old school district already has experienced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kron4.com\/news\/bay-area\/3-shootings-at-oakland-schools-in-past-60-days\/\">several school shootings<\/a>, larger enrollments,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/oaklandside.org\/2021\/11\/03\/oakland-tech-students-walk-out-to-protest-sexual-assault-and-harassment\/\">sexual assault accusations<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sanfrancisco\/news\/ousd-closures-oakland-students-mark-walkout\/\">protests due to district school closures<\/a>&nbsp;since the beginning of the pandemic.&nbsp;This often-added pressure on educators feeling unsafe at their school sites, some even walking off the job.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo there\u2019s a shortage everywhere,\u201d Davis agreed. \u201cFrom teachers to security because staff feel like, \u2018why aren\u2019t we protected?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Masking the problem<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Educators having to reintroduce students into the educational system during an ongoing pandemic proved to be taxing, Church said.&nbsp;In the beginning, mask mandates made it difficult to identify who a student was. \u201cIt was so strange going through the mental envisioning of what you thought people look like.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Davis also found without facial recognition, it was more difficult to make connections.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo when you see a kid on campus or outside of your class, you couldn\u2019t talk to that child,\u201d Davis said. \u201cIt was hard to do that and wanting to be six-to-12 feet from somebody \u2026 in addition to not even knowing who it was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Oakland Tech teachers said the incoming freshman class had not been on a school campus since the seventh grade, which caused a huge social and emotional jump to go from middle school to high school.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPicture a seventh grader: COVID happens. Two years later, you\u2019re back on campus. So, technically our ninth graders are seventh graders,\u201d\u201d Davis explained. The educational mindset of the incoming freshman is that of someone in the seventh grade.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Physically absent<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Destiny Arts Center in downtown Oakland saw different challenges than those of Oakland Tech and some of the other district schools, Massengale said. So supporting them was different,\u201d Massengale said about the smaller groups of students the Center works with. \u201cAs far as the teens, we have a teen hip hop class that kind of fell off. I think it went from maybe 15 down to about six.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And because Zoom was the primary way to engage with others during the pandemic, it missed the mark with Destiny Arts students. As an organization it worked well for meetings and retaining staff, but it was difficult to teach a dance class using this method.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve got 12 kids in front of you and your computer, each one of them is moving in a different position because the bandwidth is not continuous for every single computer,\u201d Massengale said about one of the issues he faced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lessons learned<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As newer studies continue to show the disparities in education during the last almost three years, there\u2019s one that is less documented \u2013 the lessons educators learned from the pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJust making more platforms for dialogue, concerns and help all of those things came out of Zoom,\u201d&nbsp; Massengale said. Online video conferencing helped Destiny Arts\u2019 students, who were normally into dance and movement, share more discussions and dialogue about what they were experiencing.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oakland educators also shared how they were showing up in service of their students \u2013 not just as educators, but simply as caring humans \u2013 to help create a different reality for their charges and possibly change their perspectives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The consistent care and emotional support of the educators made all the difference for the students to return to classes at Destiny Arts Center once the doors were reopened.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat it [showing support] did do was [provided] more community building with the youth that stayed,\u201d said Massengale, adding a bond was solidified for the ones who were taking classes and were able to continue working with Destiny Arts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo that particular set \u2026 those kids went through COVID together,\u201d the school\u2019s Culture Keeper explained. \u201cThey emotionally collapsed. Like the world collapsed on them and the adults that were trying to check up on them continuously, constantly and consistently \u2026 they [the students] showed up for that.\u201d&nbsp; Despite the decrease in enrollment in the beginning to some of its programs, Destiny Arts was later able to increase in class offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A new normal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back at Oakland Tech, Davis\u2019 PE class had no set curriculum. So she used her class period as an opportunity to build relationships with her students, referred to as \u201cMental Health Mondays.\u201d During this time, she asked personal development questions like \u201cWhat are your dreams?\u201d One student reportedly said he was grateful because it was something he hadn\u2019t been asked since he was younger.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another change teachers saw during the pandemic was a new and\/or renewed interest in social activism by students. One example of this was in the spring of 2020 when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/edsource.org\/2020\/oakland-students-organize-protest-of-george-floyd-murder-pleading-to-be-heard\/632891\">Oakland Tech students protested<\/a>&nbsp;along with the rest of the world following the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Church said students continued to rally in 2021 and after the schools returned fulltime to in-person education and in 2022, they protested to advocate for themselves and their own needs as students.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere was a lot of organizing around like sexual assault and harassment and students organizing,\u201d the restorative justice educator said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the periods of time when students and teachers were still required to mask up, Davis said she was able to recognize the mask as a visual representation of adolescent physical metamorphosis such as acne or getting braces.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo the mask literally became their mask of their insecurities,\u201d Davis explained. \u201cThey struggle with societal acceptance of the way that they look.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Davis said transparency about her own experiences and struggles also helped students relate and find some acceptance with their image insecurities. \u201cI would use my own personal struggle as a lesson.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite all the challenges educators experienced, there were some valuable lessons learned that previous generations would not experience. The socialization of a school environment provides cognitive development skills, both positive and negative to their lives, but it takes a humanistic approach to make it successful.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lack of learning about my students as humans,\u201d the PE teacher said.&nbsp;\u201cWe\u2019re really just focused on learning more about each other and culture building.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Brandy Collins<\/strong>\u00a0is a writer and a self-proclaimed Professional Aunty.
