March 11, 2020.
After more than 118,000 cases in 114 countries and 4,291 deaths, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic.
In an effort to highlight the short- and long-term effects of the virus, the National Association of Black Journalists, with funding from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, created grants to be awarded to Black-owned media outlets, NABJ members and freelance journalists to develop investigative pieces; feature and enterprise stories and/or series; and productions, which focus on the impact COVID-19 is having on
K-12 education.
In late 2022, shades Magazine was awarded a $10,000 grant from NABJ and created the following stories:
- How a pandemic played mind games with some youth
- Language, tech barriers affect both Latino students, families
- Educators share how disparities impact Oakland high schoolers during COVID-19 pandemic
